WE WALK OUR TALK

Welcome Home

FIRDA was established in 2000 by three Aboriginal women from Queensland. Mark Droste Debra Bennett and myself with the help our our Elders and our patron Aunty Mary Graham.  At  the time we worked in mental health, drug and alcohol services management, and therapeutic recovery programs in mainstream government services.  We discovered the lack of cultural knowledge, engagement and understanding of Indigenous peoples by health professionals was endemic and affected outcomes.  We saw the need for competent education, inquiry and research into the shared recovery work for Indigenous peoples with the dominant culture in families, children, adult and community programs for abuse, dependency, addiction, emotional, physical, psychological and sexual violence.  The need exists in all mainstream systems in education, health, community development, psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry and other allied services.  We volunteer our time, funding and energy to the transformation of our communities to ensure cultural sustainability, self esteem and self determination in all our work, engagement and training services. We do retreats for our people for free and provide advocacy services in prisons via our various projects.   We do Aboriginal Men and Women's business workshops in different locations around Australia with the permission and on invitation from custodians. We do other retreats based in knowledges we have learned over our lives. Working with Us Mob, Story Writing and sharing stories, and others. We support learning about the knowledges of our cultures and our Laws and how to live them in daily life.  We do these  every two months.
